Our parish campus these days is a dazzling palette of stalwart green, feeble yellow, fiery orange, and moribund red. TeePee and Kyle, as assiduous as the trees are deciduous, blow the leaves from the parking lots and sidewalks. By the time they finish their Sisyphean toil, freshly-fallen leaves stipple the ground behind them. Daylight is no longer saved. The year wanes. And the lectionary reminds us that this world, this life, the things that seem to us so real and enduring, are passing away.
“My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God, like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water” (Ps 63). The desire of our heart, what we long for, cannot be fully satisfied by anything temporal but only by the Eternal. These final Sundays in Ordinary Time, and the first Sundays in Advent, draw our attention to the Last Things, the “novissima”: death, judgment, heaven, and hell. “Stay awake and be ready! For you do not know on what day your Lord will come,” says the Alleluia verse before the Gospel this Sunday.
The parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids is a tale of appraisal. The task of an appraiser is to assess the value of a thing. In this case, it is a marriage. The greater the worth of this marriage, the longer the bridesmaids will have to wait for the negotiations between the bridegroom and his father-in-law before entering into the wedding feast. Five of the bridesmaids are foolish appraisers, and they bring oil for only a short amount of time. They value the marriage too lightly. Instead, the wise bridesmaids know that this marriage is immensely important. They bring enough oil for a long wait.
And what about us? How much importance do we give the Bridegroom, Jesus Christ? In our manner of living, in the decisions we make, at what value do we appraise him? “Stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”

Estos días, el recinto de nuestra parroquia es deslumbrante de verdes persistentes, amarillos tenues, naranjas encendidos y rojos agónicos. TeePee y Kyle, tan asiduos como los árboles son deciduos, retiran las hojas de las aceras. Cuando terminan su labor sísifica, ya nuevas hojas recién caídas salpican el suelo. El año declina. Y el leccionario nos recuerda que este mundo, esta vida, lo que nos parece tan real y duradero, está pasando.
«Mi alma tiene sed de ti, Señor, Dios mío; como tierra reseca, sin agua» (Salmo 63). El anhelo de nuestro corazón, lo que tanto deseamos, no se puede satisfacer por nada temporal, sino solo por lo Eterno. Estos últimos domingos del Tiempo Ordinario, y los primeros domingos de Adviento, dirigen nuestra atención hacia las postrimerías, los “novissima”: la muerte, el juicio, el cielo, y el infierno. «Estén preparados, porque no saben a qué hora va a venir el Hijo del hombre», dice el versículo del Aleluya antes del Evangelio de este domingo.
La parábola de las jóvenes sabias y las necias es un cuento de tasación. La tarea de un tasador es determinar el valor de una cosa. En este caso, se trata de un matrimonio. Cuanto mayor sea el valor de este matrimonio, más tiempo tendrán que esperar las jóvenes mientras el novio negocia con su suegro antes de entrar al banquete de bodas. Cinco de ellas son tasadores necias: solo traen aceite para un tiempo breve. Han subestimado el valor del matrimonio. En cambio, las jóvenes sabias comprenden que este matrimonio es de una importancia inmensa; por eso, traen suficiente aceite para una larga espera.
¿Y nosotros? ¿Qué importancia le otorgamos al Novio, Jesucristo? En la forma de vivir, en las decisiones que tomamos, ¿qué valor le asignamos a Él? «Estén atentos, porque no saben ni el día ni la hora»
